Laura Smither Scholarship Awarded for the 12th year.
The Laura Recovery Center - for missing children - proudly announces that Friendswood High School graduate Ms. Lena Silva is this year's recipient of the Laura Smither Scholarship. This annual $3,000 scholarship honors the memory of Laura Kate Smither, who was abducted and murdered in April 1997. Laura Smither was 12 years old when she died so this years scholarship is particularly poignant for the Smither family, as Lena is the 12th recipient of this scholarship. Bob and Gay Smither are so proud of all the scholarship winners and the many accomplishments they have made in their lives.
Lena Silva has been accepted at Rice University where she plans to pursue a liberal arts degree. Her interest and passion lies in the area of social services, and upon the advice of Rice University she plans to study an undergraduate degree plan that will prepare her for a legal degree, which she aspires to take at Harvard Law School. Lena has pursued a vigorous and demanding high school curriculum, but she also made time for service work as a volunteer. She was the President of the Interact Club, Master of Ceremony for the Battle of the Bands, a Team Leader for the Relay for Life and a project initiator for programs at Hope Village. She is active at the Friendswood Community Church, where she has led small groups and classes at vacation bible school and put in many service hours helping with Hurricane Ike recovery. In addition she managed to find time to be on the Wranglerette Drill Team and serve on the Friendswood High School yearbook staff.
The Laura Recovery Center and the Laura Smither Scholarship Committee wishes Lena every success in her college years and beyond.
